West Brunswick Christmas Clash
Coach Hill's thoughts: We traveled 6.5 hours by van down to Shallote,NC. Our team was shorthanded, having a freshman at 103 and leaving our 215 pounder at home due to academic obligations, the hawks would be forfeiting 2 weight classes; 189, 215. We wrestled well over the two day period(7dual matches). As a team we only lost a total of 13 out of 98 84 matches wrestled(88% winning percentage). In the finals we wrestled against W.Brunswick, a team that has aspirations of winning their state tourney. Hayfield won all but 5 bouts against them to win the team title. I was impressed over the improvement noted since the NOVA tourney last week in our wrestling in the advantage position, as we were able to score readily from this position. I also noted some areas of concern, notabley our conditioning is not where it needs to be at this point of the season and some wrestlers are not keeping their focus from one match to another. Mike Poliquin was particulary outstanding, as he dominated all of his opponents from every position and situation. Jose Martinez showed alot of grit by defeating an 1998 freestyle all-american by t-fall despite wrestling with a painful shoulder injury.
